The Hand Grenade lamp was designed for the building of the Finnish Engineers' Association (Alvar Aalto 1948–1953). The same model was used in the Council Chamber of Säynätsalo Town Hall (Alvar Aalto 1949–1952).
Nicknamed “Golden Bell,” Pendant Light A330S has a sculptural quality that can be appreciated whether the light is switched on or off. Casting golden reflections, the perforated rim of Pendant Light A330S creates a memorable halo effect and prevents glare. Made from a single piece of brass or steel, the elegant “Golden Bell” was created by Aino and Alvar Aalto for the interior of The Savoy Restaurant, Helsinki in 1937. The “Golden Bell” embodies Alvar Aalto’s signature streamlined aesthetic, while the light it provides is both warm-toned and characteristically diffuse.
The A331, nicknamed “Beehive,” is one of Alvar Aalto’s most popular lighting designs. Suitable for homes and public spaces alike, “Beehive” creates a warm, diffuse light when switched on, a result of the ingenious design that features several rows of perforated steel rings. True to its nickname, “Beehive” retains its distinctive sculptural presence even when unlit and as originally designed for Finland’s University of Jyväskylä in 1953.
Pendant Light A201 was designed by Alvar Aalto in 1952 for the library of Säynätsalo Town Hall in central Finland. Composed of formed sheet steel, Pendant Light A201 possesses a sculptural presence; its beauty can be appreciated whether switched on or off. The light exiting the lower and upper part of the shade creates a beautiful halo, typical to Aalto who sought to make artificial light as indirect and soft as possible. The perforated ring is designed to diffuse light and prevent glare, creating an ambient glow.
