Ingmar Relling designed the Siesta in 1965: a laminated frame, a canvas sling and leather cushions, light enough to lift with one hand and comfortable enough to stay in.
It put Norway on the international furniture map and is still made there by LK Hjelle, in oak or beech frames with a choice of canvas and leather.

A factory between the fjords.
LK Hjelle is a furniture factory on the north-west coast of Norway, in Sunnmøre, a region of steep mountains and narrow fjords with a long tradition of furniture making. Founded in the 1940s; year to confirm. It still designs, sews and assembles its furniture there.
Its best-known piece is the Siesta. When Ingmar Relling designed it in 1965, Norwegian furniture was barely known abroad. The chair won awards, sold around the world and helped put Norway on the map of modern design.

The Siesta frame is laminated beech or oak, pressed into shape in layers. A canvas sling is stretched across it on a cord, and loose leather or fabric cushions sit on top. The sling gives with the body, and the whole chair can be lifted with one hand.
It was also one of the first lounge chairs designed to be shipped flat and assembled at home. Each chair is still sewn and assembled at the factory in Norway.

Ingmar Relling
Relling set up his own studio in Sykkylven, on Norway's furniture coast, in 1950. The Siesta won first prize in the Norwegian furniture industry's chair competition the year it was designed, 1965. It has since furnished homes around the world, the White House among them.
